| Résumé : | Hydropower or hydro energy storage or pumped hydro energy storage (PHES) is the most largely used energy storage technology in the world today, representing roughly 97% of the energy stored every year, with about 300GWe installed. This energy storage concept uses a combination of turbomachinery equipment, electrical equipment, water reservoirs, piping and large civil engineering facilities. This introductory chapter discusses the motivation for this energy storage approach and describes the general characteristics of hydraulic (hydro/water) energy storage concept. Many mechanical combinations and configurations of PHES facilities and electricity generation systems are of course possible, including also small hydro power plants and small PHES. An overview of the chapters presented in the section on hydro energy storage or pumped hydro energy storage (PHES) is also given. |
