Résumé : The use of non-invasive ventilation has increased in the last few years. Several studies have demonstrated that NIV is effective in acute respiratory failure. One of the most important contra-indication and cause of failure of NIV is altered metal status. Monitoring of the patient's level of consciousness before and during NIV is essential for a safe application of this method. Patient's comfort during NIV is also an important predictor of successful ventilation. Claustrophobia, anxiety and agitation can reduce patient compliance to NIV. A non-pharmacological approach can help reduce patients stress and should always be implemented when initiated NIV.
