Résumé : This chapter explores the meaning of the dedication "à la Papouasie” found on the title pages of Olivier Messiaen’s avant-garde piano etudes Île de feu I and Île de feu II (1950). It begins by studying Messiaen’s presentation and analyses of the “Papuan” qualities of the two Île de feu etudes, then retraces thematic origins of the studies in a collection of traditional Fuyuge song transcribed by Sacred Heart missionary André Sorin. The second part of the chapter describes the networks of institutions and people that brought Fuyuge song to Messiaen. Missionary accounts of Fuyuge musical culture are compared to the recent anthropological research of Eric Hirsch in an effort to contextualize the songs attributed to the Fuyuge people Koma Pio, Avole Timoko, and Hele Marsiale found in Messiaen’s sketch materials.
