Résumé : | Entangled among distinct research domains, the study of Egyptian rock art runs in isolation and evolves slowly. It would seem profitable, at a time when interest in rock art by Egyptologists and Egyptian authorities is having a marked increase,2 to take a few steps back and provide a heuristic reflection that could aid future studies. Notwithstanding the undeniable progress made during the last decades, we are still struggling with the “why”, the “who”, the “what for”, and the “what is the meaning of this specific rock art”. It is a well-known fact that every rock art study around the globe has to cope with this frustrating reality, but Egypt somehow stands out because of the scale of the surveys dedicated to its rock art for almost a century and the wealth of archaeological data related to its alleged makers. Despite these advantages, these productions have always been discussed in a relative marginality. With the conviction that these limitations are to be overcome in the years to come, this paper proposes a brief epistemological overview of rock art research and aims to provide food for future thought. |
