Résumé : Pregabalin is indicated for the treatment of neuropathic pain, epilepsy and generalized anxiety disorder. However, despite the demonstrated positive therapeutic effects of pregabalin, its misuse has significantly increased in recent years in Europe. This pregabalin misuse seems to be linked to the GABA-mimetic properties of this drug that may have direct or indirect effects on the dopamine reward system (strongly involved in substance abuse). Furthermore, among patients misusing pregabalin, two specific profiles have been identified depending on the desired effect: self-destructive vs. recreational. However, regardless of this desired effect, the pregabalin misuse is a major public health problem given the risk of withdrawal symptoms, overdose and interaction with other central nervous system depressants (alcohol, benzodiazepines or opioids). Thus, this emergence of the pregabalin misuse seems to justify a better awareness of healthcare professionals in order to allow improved prevention of the potential negative consequences related to this pregabalin misuse.
