Résumé : Psychiatry is a very complex medical specialty, generating numerous controversies on topics such as mental illness's definition, scientific validity of the models used, etiologies and treatment's validity as well for psychotropics as for psychotherapies. This series of articles aims at giving an update on these topics. This first paper examines the diagnostic question. Diagnosis in psychiatry is a mixture of probable pathologies and socio-cultural constructions varying across periods and spaces, as it doesn't rely on well identified physio pathological mechanisms or on complementary tests. Nevertheless, it seems not feasible to replace the DSM system, as our brain is functioning on a categorical pattern, and to ensure functions such as identification, communication, and integration into health care systems.
