Résumé : | At the present time, most musical instrument museums use the Hornbostel-Sachs classification system in order to organize their collections and create links between institutions. However, the essentially hierarchic nature of this classificatory scheme raises fundamental questions concerning the accuracy with which complex modular designs can be coded without ignoring their multifarious nature. In this article, the limitations of the Hornbostel-Sachs system are investigated with respect to instruments with timbre modifiers and electronic configurations. By introducing a modular approach of classification within a cyberspace context, the limits of the system are stretched in order to get closer to reality. |
