Résumé : | The North Cemetery of Vari is the main source of evidence for burial practices in the Attic countryside during the seventh century. Despite its importance, it remained largely unpublished until access to the excavation diary and the manuscripts of the excavator Phoivos Stavropoullos enabled detailed study of the excavated burials and finds. Based on this new evidence, the earliest use of the cemetery can now be placed in the early seventh century. More importantly, the cemetery offers rich evidence for the development of tomb cults to recently departed locals, venerated as ancestors. |
