Résumé : This doctoral research analyses the ongoing debate on ecological transition of post-industrial European cities in relation to the notion of ‘circularity’, as a concept gaining momentum in urban debate on sustainability. This work aims at contributing to the developing of such notion in the context of the urban built environment, delineating further the notion of Urban Circularity (UC) and more in general of ‘circular city’, both conceptually and empirically, through a case-studies oriented analysis. By focusing on the complexity of circular actions in practice in the Brussels Capital Region (BCR), this research arrives at the identification of an existing ‘gap’ in between the world of abstraction of circularity principles (looping-schemes illustrating ‘circularity’ strategies) and the world of complex terrain experimentation and hands-on knowledge-development. The aim is to help the identification of current barriers and potential horizons in UC implementation and the influences that urban planning strategies have on such practices.
