Résumé : Introduction : Given the limited data available in the literature, the aim of this review was to systematically investigate the risk of type 2 diabetes associated with insomnia combined to short sleep duration in order to confirm the role possibly played by this short sleep duration in the particular relationship between insomnia and type 2 diabetes. Material et method : Using the PubMed database, 77 articles published from January 1987 to December 2019 were identified and 5 met the inclusion criteria (3 articles investigating the risk of type 2 diabetes associated with insomnia combined to short sleep duration in the general population and 2 articles investigating the risk of type 2 diabetes associated with short sleep duration in insomnia sufferers). Results : Even if the level of scientific evidence of these 5 studies is low, there seems to be consistent results (4 studies out of 5) on the increased risk of type 2 diabetes associated with insomnia combined to short sleep duration if insomnia is diagnosed based on the criteria for insomnia disorder. Conclusion : Despite consistent results, additional studies of better scientific quality seem essential in order to allow a better understanding of the role played by short sleep duration in the particular relationship between insomnia and type 2 diabetes.
