Résumé : We address the question whether there are ‘social kinds’ the way that there are ‘natural kinds’. Can the determination of the meaning of certain terms that denote social phenomena be accounted for in terms of ‘indexical externalism’ à la Putnam? We propose that different kinds of externalism are grounded in different patterns of semantic deference. Those deferential patterns are observable empirically, and we outline a survey we’re currently conducting that should help us answer our research question.
