Résumé : The extravasation of intravenous substances is a potentially catastrophic complication of intravenous drug administration. It is caused by the infiltration of perivascular tissues by a drug that was dedicated to the bloodstream. The knowledge of the symptoms and the risk factors of the extravasations are vital for the prevention of devastating effects of some drugs. The knowledge of different causes, lesions and swift care are paramount in order to offer the best care to patients and to limit the potential harm caused by an extravasation. The prevention of the extravasation will be the pillar on which the care of the patients will be based. The treatment should be administered as soon as possible, and will be either conservative or surgical. A review of the literature using the MEDLINE database was performed in order to create a protocol, dedicated to the nursing and medical teams as to prevent, recognize and treat extravasations of intravenous drugs. We expose a practical guide based on the review of the literature and our knowledge and experience at CHU Brugmann (Brussels, Belgium).
