Résumé : This chapter reports on a series of surveys which the Centre de Recherche pour l'Habitat, l'Urbanisme et l'Architecture (CRHUA) – a department of the Ministere d'Urbanisme – carried out in 1985-86 to attempt to meet some of these needs. In the course of the surveys, CRHUA provided an accurate delineation of the official quartieis of Dakar and a complete inventory of public infrastructure. The regional capitals play a limited role, acting only as intermediaries linking Dakar with the rest of the country, while smaller centers are considered towns only by their size or by their administrative role, as their economic base is essentially rural in character. The survey was limited to the First and Second Departements of the Region of Dakar, known as the Departements of Dakar and of Pikine. The oldest part of the Departement of Pikine was built to the standards of the 1950s and 1960s.
