Résumé : Over recent years new concepts have emerged from the natural sciences related to the self-organization, or structural evolution, of complex systems. These new ideas, together with their profound implications for the understanding of human systems, are discussed in the introduction. The question of model building within the context of these ideas is next addressed. Finally, several examples are given of applications in the domain of urban and regional dynamic models.
