Road redevelopments are increasingly opting for levelling out and new accessibility standards are leading to the disappearance or alteration of most old pavements. The first pavements in Brussels were developed in 1776. Their history is more complex than it seems. With the arrival of this new urban infrastructure, the roads underwent radical change: road cambering, sewer system, expansion of paving, new public lighting, planting, installation of urban furniture, development of alignment and levelling plans. Indeed, pavements played a major role in the organisation of the “modern street” which was gradually established throughout the 19th century.
