Résumé : The concepts of Self and that of "Soi" are given very different meanings by writers in heterogeneous disciplines and schools of thought. This paper does not seek to provide a complete review of these, but instead, by following the thread of the Self on an impressionist course from neurobiology to the history of art, to show, within the different fields in which it occurs, the relevance of the concept to the general understanding of individual and group identity in their intrinsic links to the complexities of the world.
