Résumé : The second half of the 20th century is associated with global acceleration processes, notably mobility ones. However, there has been a continual tension between imaginaries of fast and slow mobility which handles functional, sensitive and social dimensions of mobility infrastructure and practices. To reach an in-depth comprehension of past and present urban dynamics in Brussels, I analyse this tension from the ‘embodiments’ of imaginaries focussing on the field (mobility infrastructures, material city), the sensitive (narratives and sensory-motor behaviours) and the image (films and photos). This paper describes the great triple evolution since the 1950s, in the tension between imaginaries of fast and slow mobilities, of (1) the limits between spaces devoted to speed, slowness, and overlaps, (2) of the scale of the designed city, and (3) of valued aesthetics in terms of ambiance. It gives an overview of the results of a PhD research on the tension between imaginaries of fast and slow mobility in Brussels since the 1950s, funded by the F.R.S. FNRS (2016–2020).
