Résumé : A possible inhibitory influence of prolactin on LH secretion through direct action on pituitary gonadotropes has recently been suggested. Our present results provide convincing experimental evidence for such a direct inhibitory action of prolactin on FSH secretion. Prolactin concentrations used in the present work might seem rather high. However, we feel that, rather than comparing them with circulating plasma levels, they should be compared with prolactin concentrations prevailing in the immediate surroundings of pituitary cells in vivo. These may be expected to be rather higher. Therefore, it is suggested that the inhibitory mechanism uncovered by our present work may be of physiological significance.
