Résumé : Introduction: The high incidence of unions between people with similar socioeconomic characteristics evidences the persistence of rigid social structures, contributing to the intergenerational reproduction of socio-economic inequality and perpetuating structural inequalities that affect the living conditions, the health and the illness of the people. Objective: To describe the educational homogamy in the way of formation of heterosexual couples in the Ecuadorian population at the beginning of the 21th century. Methods: Based on data collected in four provinces of Ecuador, various measuring instruments (rates of homogamy, homogamy index, representativeness index) were used in 4 711 couples. Results: Educational homogamy rate varies depending on the place of residence, and is more significant in the urban area than in the provincial rural towns. The educational homogamy seems to depend on the proportion of women having higher or university educational level and it was higher in the ends of the educational structure. Conclusions: These findings indicate the existence of a rigid structure in class relationships and minimal social mobility among them. We face a scenario of reproduction of stratified social structures and perpetuation of structural inequities that can have a negative impact on the people’s life.
