Résumé : The functions, sources and requirements of the main components of a well balanced diet are described. Difficulties occur when trying to establish adequate diets for the elderly. This may be due to misunderstandings and lack of knowledge, financial problems, frequent constipation often leading to an abuse of laxatives, restricted fruit intake and tooth loss. The incidence of protein and vitamin deficiency during old age is underlined in the results of 2 surveys conducted in Brussels. Nutrition of the elderly must receive further attention.
