Résumé : In Africa below the Sahel there is a crisis of agricultural production. Among the factors analysed is the technology used for production, the distribution of populations, the political divisions born from the colonial period, the difficulties of communication and of commerce. The study shows that there are possibilities for progress using modest means and building on the farmers' current knowhow. The article ends with larger-range and difficult possibilities: the wide-spread use of irrigation and a more intensive agriculture and the creation of an African Common Market for agriculture and raw materials production. -from English summary
