Résumé : The use of butriptyline in general psychiatric practice has demonstrated the anti-depressive and anxiolytic properties of this psychotropic drug. Seventy five per cent of the depressed patients showed a definite improvement after six weeks of treatment. This improvement reached 50% after 3 weeks, when measured with the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression and the Self-rating Scale of Zung. Side effects were minimal at the usual dose of 75 mg/day and disappeared while treatment continued. Only in exceptional cases was it necessary to reduce the dose. Because of its convenient dosage schedule and good anti-depressive and tranquillizing properties, butriptyline appears to be a useful psychotropic drug, not only for the specialist, but also for the general practitioner in the treatment of depressed patients seen in daily practice.
