Résumé : Molecular-dynamics simulations of stability and diffusion of two small clusters (formula presented) and (formula presented) after soft deposition on Au(111) surfaces were performed, using a classical second momentum approximation of tight-binding scheme. These studies reveal that the three-dimensional cluster collapses via a so-called solid-on-solid settling mechanism when a certain temperature is reached and that the diffusion process of the two-dimensional clusters depends strongly on temperature and cluster size. Diffusion of the small cluster (formula presented) changes from simple uncorrelated random motions at low temperature to more complex ones at high temperature, where the cluster diffuses through two stages: correlated and uncorrelated random motion stages. Moreover, the correlated motion is so enhanced for the larger cluster (formula presented) that it can occur at lower temperature. © 2002 The American Physical Society.
