Résumé : Signs of sepsis are systematically present in each critically ill patient after a few days of stay in an intensive care unit. The associated metabolic response includes a rise in expended energy a few after its onset and changes in the use of energy substrates. General recommendations include the preference of the oral or enteral route and a limitation of the caloric intake during the early phase. Nutritional interventions have been assessed to modulate the infl ammatory response underlying the metabolic changes, including the addition of supplemental omega-3 fatty acids, glutamine and antioxidants. The benefi cial effects of these interventions started during the course of critical illness have not been convincingly confi rmed. Hence, no specifi c diet or nutritional formula is currently recommended.
