| Résumé : | The rates of quaternization of 1‐, 2‐, 4‐, 9‐azaphenanthrenes, 9‐azaanthracene, 1 and 7‐azafluoranthenes with methyl iodide have been determined in nitrobenzene at temperatures ranging from 7o to 100o By comparing data from the literature for pyridine, quinoline and isoquinoline with the present experimental and theoretical results, it is concluded that steric effects produced by peri hydrogens play an important part in this reaction. The pKa of 2‐azaphenanthrene, 1‐ and 7‐azafluoranthenes in 50% water/methanol are reported. Copyright © 1962 Wiley‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim |
