Résumé : In line with WHO guidelines for monitoring adverse drug reactions Belgium participates in a monitoring program together with 22 other WHO member nations with Sweden responsible for the further processing of the collected data. It is now accepted that about 5% of all hospitalised cases are due to medication and that 10 to 20% of all admissions will experience undesirable drug reactions during their hospital stay. The article discusses the incidence of such reactions, economic aspects (e.g. extra length of stay due to medication problems). The main part of the article looks at drug monitoring in hospitals, at detection of adverse reactions, at different registration and recording practices and at the accuracy of the data (is the adverse reaction due to the drug). A final paragraph looks at information processing requirements and personnel training.
