Résumé : Patients with cirrhosis are prone to develop sepsis, sepsis-induced organ failure and to die. In cirrhosis, sepsis is accompanied by a markedly pro-inflammatory cytokine storm, which converts responses that are normally beneficial for fighting infections into excessive, damaging inflammation responsible for organ failure. Early administration of adequate empiric antibiotherapy reduces significantly mortality in spontaneous bacterial peritonitis. The addition of intravenous albumin to antibiotics prevents the development of renal failure and improves survival. Novel therapeutic strategies should be evaluated in patients with cirrhosis and severe sepsis or septic shock. Copyright © 2007 John Libbey Eurotext - All rights reserved.
