Résumé : The information that can be produced by ultrasonography has been of such value that medical practitioners have sought to widen the grounds for using it and then to consider its systematic use in certain specialities such as obstetrics. It is important to study objectively whether it is worth while subjecting all pregnant women to such an examination systematically. The procedures that we have carried out to arrive at an answer have been reviewed and criticised. The method we have adopted has been to work out the best strategy to be employed. Cost-effective analysis of ultrasonography has been carried out when the test was used at least three times in a pregnancy, or not at all. The authors conclude that using ultrasonography is per patient cost-effective for the individual and for society so long as it is used correctly, and that means with experience, with good equipment and with enough time given to each examination.
