Résumé : Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) has been recognized as an effective treatment for depressive disorders, with a reasonably low risk/benefit ratio. It is still disputed, however, and considered with suspicion by the public and by some nursing teams as well. Probably the feeling that the parameters used are not well controlled is responsible for this attitude. This paper presents a review of data allowing to optimalize ECT. Currently, the best method seems to be the use of brief pulse stimuli applied in volleys, bilaterally.
