Résumé : An essay on methodology for the elaboration of nursing care quality focusses on three broad subject areas: definitions, difficulties and method. Definitions are given for basic terms such as reliability, validity and sensitivity of a method. The principal problems that have to be dealt with concern a problem of vocabulary, limits to nursing care (definition), unit of analysis, criteria used, standards to be attained, population for study, observer reliability and sources of information. A brief discussion of each of these is given, in all instances a rigorous adherence to protocols is required to ascertain outcome quality.
