Résumé : Glucose is major circulating carbohydrate fuel, which may be used by most cells of the body. It is also the only carbohydrate used during parenteral nutrition at the present time. In spite of markedly elevated glucose turnover in conditions of stress, oxidative metabolism is not increased in the same proportion. Hence, large loads of glucose may represent an additional stress and therefore maximal recommended infusion rate is 5 mg/kg/min in adult patients. © 2008 European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism.
