Résumé : The functional condition of the thyroid and hypophysis can be examined with the aid of synthetic 'thyreotropin releasing hormone' (TRH). Intravenous injection of TRH causes a transient increase of the TSH level of the plasma. In hyperthyroidism and in autonomously functioning nodules ('hot nodules') in the thyroid, this response does not occur. In hypothyroidism, the response depends on the localization of the lesion: exaggerated response in primary pathology of the thyroid, reduced or absent response in lesions of the hypophysis and a delayed response in hypothalamic lesions.
