Résumé : A relationship may be observed between the early response of the growth curve, bacterial morphology and lag of regrowth in post antibiotic period of E. coli culture treated by β-lactam antibiotics. The growth curve study was performed with the MS-2 system. 8 strains isolated from clinical specimens (blood culture) were used. The maximal value of residual growth (first peak of the growth curve) was concentration dependent for ampicillin and cefoperazone but only slightly concentration dependent for azlocillin. The lag of regrowth was concentration dependent for ampicillin and cefoperazone but not for azlocillin. Despite the fact that short filaments may be seen in ampicillin and cefoperazone treated cultures, the long filaments observed in azlocillin treated culture were not observed. This observation reflects the different modes of action of a ureido penicillin and a ureido cephalosporin on E. coli.
