Résumé : Objective: To perform an instrumental study of pelvic floor tone (tonometric testing) and its correlation with different parameters. Subjects and methods: Statistical comparisons were performed between the results of basal and load tone in 2 patient groups with similar characteristics except that one group was composed of women in the immediate post-partum period (15 women in the first group and 10 in the second). Results: Both groups were normotonic (basal and load tone). Nevertheless, in the second group a relative decrease of approximately 20% was detected in women with previous children. No statistically significant correlations were found among any of the factors analyzed and pelvic floor tone. Conclusions: Childbirth is not the key factor in reducing basal perineal tone (in the short-term). However delivery seems to have a direct effect on load tone, probably due to damage to the pudendal nerves (myelin sheath).
