Résumé : In this chapter we give an overview of the multiple steps involved in designing, executing and publishing research, drawing examples from sleep and circadian rhythms research. The topics covered in this chapter include hypothesis development, the importance of experimental design, sample size determination, and recommendations for the execution of studies. Furthermore, the different types of experimental designs used in sleep research are elaborated upon along with the pros and cons of each technique. Finally, ethical issues are discussed along with recommendations for publication and dissemination of research. This chapter will be of interest to students, junior scientist with limited research experience, clinicians and all consumers of scientific output. Understanding the process by which studies are conducted will aid clinicians discern whether study results are relevant and appropriate for integration into clinical practice. Our hope is that the reader will have an understanding of some of the pitfalls and strengths of scientific research and will be able to integrate this knowledge when reading scientific articles, media reporting on scientific findings and in their clinical practice.
