Résumé : A better understanding of the main channels through which local populations are affected by refugee inflows would help improve the efficiency of the programs initiated by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The common perception of refugee camps is that they are un-organized masses of temporary tents occupied by passive refugees receiving assistance. Significant efforts have been made to understand the long-term impact of refugees on local communities to achieve the objectives set by the UNHCR programs. These efforts information collected in the field with data from the very comprehensive Kagera and Health Development Survey to identify how the local population has been affected by the refugee inflows from Burundi in 1993 and Rwanda in 1994 in the region of Kagera. Researchers have also used these data to investigate how migration increases the standard of living of those who are physically able to move from one place to another.
