Résumé : | This paper reviews recent findings on the metabolism of the fluoride ion, especially in man and in dosages usually recommended for the prevention of caries. The subjects selected for discussion have been restricted to systems where the investigations during the last five years have, either by themselves or in association, led to more exact knowledge or better understanding of the physiological implications of fluoride therapy. The effects on the thyroid, skeleton, kidney and placenta are dealt with. Except in the kidney, where the mechanism of urinary elimination still remains obscure-thus not permitting any firm conclusions-the author confirms the safety of fluoride therapy. Its administration by fluoridation of the water supplies increases the safety factor still further, a benefit not shared by all the proposed methods of administration. © 1963. |
