Résumé : The foraging activities of four genera (six species) of grassland ants (Formica rufibarbis, Tapinoma erraticum, Myrmica schenki, M. sabuleti, Tetramorium caespitum and T. impurum) were observed in June-July 1985 at Treignes (Belgium). Foraging activity was assessed by taking sequential records of foragers' fluxes during 30 seconds through the perimeter of 0.5×0.5m adjacent field quadrats. The ants' velocities were also measured in the field; knowing their fluxes, it was possible to calculate the densities of foragers. The latter were mapped and studied as a function of climatic parameters, to understand the niche relationships of these ants. Regarding their diurnal spatio-temporal foraging activities, the four genera were found to occupy well separated realized niches. © 1990 Masson.
