Résumé : Although the surface of Cu-5 at% aluminium alloy appears to be rapidly coated with a continuous and protective layer of Al//2O//3 after oxidation at 850 degree C and under oxygen pressures ranging from 1. 10** minus **5 to 1. 10** minus **4 Torr, the reaction starts with the simultaneous formation of cuprous oxide and alumina as shown by the behaviour of the relative amplitudes of the KLL Auger lines in oxygen spectra at the very early stages of the oxidation. The Auger study illustrates the analytical potentialities of lineshape analysis for detecting any change in the composition of thin oxide coating in the course of its growth. The proposed methodology appears to be particularly suitable when it is necessary to characterize oxide films whose thickness is inferior to the AES sampling depth.
