Résumé : Fixed bed carbonisation of coal under hydrogen pressure between 0. 1 and 5 MPa from 450 to 850 degree C, was studied at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles as a part of the Commission of the European Communities' Program 'Physical and Chemical Valorisation of Coal'. Results presented here give variation of gasification yield, gas and oil, monocyclic hydrocarbons and phenol yields, as a function of temperature and pressure, for coals of different rank. Hydrocarbonization makes possible to extract from coal more volatile matter, than their content determined by standard methods. Desulfurization during Hy. Py was studied on two high sulphur containing coals. It was demonstrated that when the coal is rich in alkaline mineral matter, an important fraction of the sulphur remains in the char.
