Résumé : Today poverty reduction is the main priority of all multilateral development organisations. This certainly has to be welcomed, since the earlier focus on economic development left too many social problems untouched. However, the manner in which poverty has been conceptualised, mainly by the World Bank, the UN (United Nations) and the UNDP (United Nations Programme on Development), raises many questions concerning development policies. This article will firstly take a brief look at the main characteristics of the new international discourse on poverty. Secondly, it will analyse the consequences of the latter for economic and social development policies. Finally, it will examine the concept of sustainability in the light of the new poverty focus. The final remarks in the article concern the future of development and poverty reduction.
