Résumé : Acute rheumatism, with an annual incidence of 1/1000 in children of school age, is among the conditions which can easily be missed in a single practice and which only reveal their true significance when related to the whole population. The example shown by Sweden indicates that prevention is both possible and effective if three conditions are observed: united action within the medical profession, the cooperation of parents, and the operation of a well organized medico social service. In Belgium, the educational, emotional or social upsets, which are at times caused by the strict application of the rules of 'exclusion', do sometimes lead to an underestimation, unconscious or deliberate, of the dangers to the individual and to the community. These dangers are also that much more serious because they affect those lower socio economic groups which are, for that very reason, especially at risk. Furthermore, the long term prognosis of acute streptococcal glomerulonephritis is not normally good, though only prolonged and careful surveillance and follow up can confirm this.
