Résumé : It is argued that disappointment with CALL is partly due to overestimating the potentialities of computers in education It is shown that computers can be used as an effective tool to teach reading comprehension skills in a foreign language Some software specifications are set up before a program written in a database management language is described along with the structure of the database used One of the reading exercises implemented illustrates the relative versatility of the software. One important aspect of the system is that it provides users with a customized dictionary facility. © 1988 Oxford University Press.
