Résumé : This article aims to evaluate Jean Améry's position within the spectrum of Holocaust Literature and comes to the conclusion that he is the first Jewish source in German Literature to address the fundamental questions of survival after Auschwitz. Moreover it will be shown that Jean Améry's philosophical reflections on memory remain unique up to the present day. Améry created his own brand of humanism in the memory of Auschwitz, a humanism constantly in dialogue with French Existentialism. It will equally become apparent that in his capacity as a novelist, he anticipated Jacques Derrida's «Deconstruction», whilst at the same time warning against its pitfalls, when it comes to the memory of the Shoah.
