Résumé : One hundred and fifteen naive adult mice of both sexes were observed for 5 min with a 1- or 2-day-old pup. They all retrieved the pup, 113 of them licked the pup, seventy-five showed nest-building and eighty displayed the lactation-position. The order in which these responses were given seemed highly predictable. Retrieving always occurred first, the lactation-position (when given) usually occurred last (in 78/80 cases). Licking was most likely to be given second after retrieving, except when carrying the pup seemed difficult and resulted in frequent dropping. In such cases, nest-building (when given), usually occurred in the second place. The serial orders in which animals gave only three or two different maternal responses were basically the same as those given by animals displaying all four maternal responses. © 1969.
