Résumé : Treatment with curative intent is well known for patients with a rectal tumor, when the lesion is localised, when the diagnosis is made early or in patients who have undergone wide resections. It should likewise be stressed that the palliative removal of a primary tumor and the surgical treatment of metastases may sometimes provide an important improvement of life expectancy and, in most cases, a comfortable survival. Since new surgical progress in the struggle for improving life expectancy appears doubtful, one must look for complementary therapies. It becomes more and more important therefore to turn to radiotherapy, chemotherapy and immunotherapy.
