Résumé : Progress in power distribution network protectionimplies new challenges that electrical engineers mustdeal with. One of these challenges is the detection ofHigh Impedance Faults (HIFs). Overcurrent protection isunsuitable for detecting HIFs in certain conditions. Thispaper presents an accurate explanation of the HIFdetection problem and a method to describe HIFs, usingsimulation, laboratory tests and fault recordings. Thepresented study constitutes the basis of a HIF detectionmethod that will be developed in the near future by ULBSiemensAG.
