Résumé : The water level gradient method as an alternative for obtaining the depth‑discharge rating curve is suggested. We explicitly compute a stream velocity using basically a prediction of channel flow resistance. We claim thatthis synthetic stream velocity is relatively easy to obtain at costs more affordable in comparison to continuous velocitymeasurements which would be obtained by H‑ADCP or non‑contact (radar) technology. The method also shouldnormally allow obtaining a valid depth‑to‑discharge relationship in a much shorter period than what the conventionalfield gauging interventions are able to achieve. The water‑level gradient method is able to explicitly provide a distinctionbetween the rising stage and the falling stage during a storm, suggesting that the information provided by this newmethod is richer than what is usually made available.
