Résumé : Expo 58 acted as a place and moment for intense, international exchange on contemporary concepts in architecture and engineering. Through its theme, the fair stimulated the assessment of technology and science as both tools and image, as they were forwarded as essential parts of the representations on nations and companies. Months before its gates were opened, Expo 58 was already referred to as “a festival of structures”, a judgment that is recurrent still in today’s evaluations. Taking into account later texts by Banham and Colquhoun, it can be argued that more than presenting innovating structures, as is commonly believed, the predominance of explicit engineering at the fair demonstrated a changing appreciation for the tectonics of advanced structures to the visiting or participating architects and engineers and, not in the least, the general public.
