Résumé : In this paper, I give a mainly pragmatic account of a variety of metalinguistic anaphora which I call world-to-language anaphora. I show that it raises significant issues with respect to salience. Most in-triguing is the fact that the referent of a world-to-language anaphor, though it is neither mentioned (directly or indirectly) nor displayed explicitly, can none the less be picked up by anaphors that have very little descriptive content and therefore re-quire their referent to be very salient. This happens in spite of the fact that the refer-ents – linguistic entities – are often very inconspicuous initially. I argue that my data are at present problematic for dis-course representation theories.
